아프리카 중부 콩고의 조세프 카빌라 대통령은 새 대통령 선출을 위한 결선투표에서 자신이 승리한데 따라 국민들에게 평정을 호소했습니다.
독립적인 기구인 선거위원회는 15일 카빌라 대통령이 58퍼센트의 지지를 얻어 42 퍼센트의 득표율을 보인 경쟁자 쟝 피에르 벰바 부통령을 물리치고 승리했다고 발표했습니다.
카빌라 대통령은 선거위원회의 발표직후 전 국민에게 화합을 호소하고 경찰과 군인들이 전국적으로 치안을 유지하기위해 노력하고 있다고 말했습니다.
국제 관측통들은 지난 10월 29일의 콩고 대통령 선거가 대체적으로 자유롭고 공정하게 실시됐다고 말했으나 벰바 후보의 지지자들은 선거부정 행위가 만연했다고 주장하고 있습니다.
벰바 후보 측은 자체 집계결과 벰바 후보가 53 퍼센트의 득표율로 승리했다고 주장하고 있습니다.

Pakistani officials say President Pervez Musharraf has commuted the death sentence of a British national convicted of murder.
Officials confirmed today (Thursday) that Mirza Tahir Hussain will instead be given a life sentence. The British national of Pakistani descent has spent the past 18 years in prison for murdering a taxi driver in 1988.
Hussain says the driver tried to sexually assault him at gunpoint and that he acted in self defense.
His case has drawn outcry from human rights groups and Hussain's family, who said the trial was unfair.
Prince Charles of Britain had discussed the case with President Musharraf during a visit to Pakistan last month. He issued a statement today (Thursday) saying he was pleased with the president's decision.
Britain's Foreign Office in London also welcomed the reports, but said it has not been officially notified of the reprieve.
