Republican U.S. senators have chosen their new leaders, after losing control of Congress to Democrats in elections this month.
Lawmakers today (Wednesday) gave unanimous support to Senator Mitch McConnell of (the southern state of) Kentucky to become the minority party leader in the upcoming session.
McConnell has been a strong supporter of U.S.-led efforts in Iraq, and has rejected calls from some Democrats to begin withdrawing troops from the country. He also is an outspoken critic of the military government in Burma and its detention of pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi.
McConnell takes over as party leader from Senator Bill Frist (of Tennessee), who is retiring.
Republican leaders in the Senate also chose Trent Lott of Mississippi to be the party's second-in-command, or whip.
