미군 전함들과 중국 잠수함이 최근 충돌 직전까지 같었다고 윌리엄 폴른 미국 태평양 함대 사령관이 말했습니다.
폴른 제독은 14일 양측이 충돌 일보 직전까지 같었다는 일간지 워싱턴 타임스의 13일자 보도를 확인하며 이같이 말했습니다.
폴른 제독은 중국 잠수함이 지난다라 태평양에서 훈련중이던 항공모함 키티 호크호와 지원 전함에 가까지 접근했었다고 말했습니다.
폴른 제독은 당시 미국 전함들이 이 잠수함을 발견하지 못했다며 그러나 그러한 사실을 탐지했다면 매우 예기치못한 상황이 발생했을 수도 있다고 말했습니다. 중국 외교부는 그러나 이번 상황에 대해 아무런 확인을 할 수 없다고 말하고 있습니다.

The chief of U.S. forces in the Pacific says a group of American warships recently had a close encounter with a Chinese submarine that could have triggered an incident.
Admiral William Fallon confirmed the encounter after "The Washington Times" newspaper published a report of the incident Tuesday.
He says the Chinese submarine came close to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk and its supporting ships as they were conducting exercises in the Pacific last month.
Fallon says the U.S. battle group was not looking for submarines at the time, but if it had, he says the incident could have escalated into something "very unforeseen".
He was speaking today (Tuesday) in Kuala Lumpur, where he attended a meeting of Asia-Pacific defense chiefs. Fallon says the encounter shows the need for the United States to have closer ties with the Chinese military.
China's foreign ministry says it cannot confirm the incident.
