미국의 도널드 럼스펠드 국방장관은 9일 과격한 극단주의자들과의 전쟁은 미국이나 어느 한 국가에 의해 승리할 수 없다고 말했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 이날 미국 중서부 캔사스주의 한 대학교에서 연설을 통해 이같이 말했습니다. 럼스펠드 장관은 이슬람 과격단체들과의 전쟁은 시간이 지나면서 전세계 수백, 수천만 이슬람교도들에 의해 승리할 것이라고 말했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 오늘날 국제 테러리스트들인 적과의 전쟁은 미국이 우방국들과 동맹국들로 하여금 각기 국경 안에서 적과 맞서고 물리칠 수 있도록 반드시 도와야 한다는 것을 의미한다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld says the war against violent extremists will not be won by any one country, including the United States.
In a speech at a university in (the U.S. midwestern state of) Kansas today (Thursday), Rumsfeld said the war against Islamist extremists will be won over time by the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world. He said today's war against a global terrorist enemy means the United States must enable its friends and allies to confront and defeat their enemies within their own borders.
His speech comes one day after President Bush said he has decided it is time for new leadership in the Defense Department. The president said he would appoint former Central Intelligence Agency Director Robert Gates to replace Rumsfeld at the Pentagon.
Widely criticized for his handling of the war in Iraq, Rumsfeld is stepping down in the wake of the Republican Party's defeat in Tuesday's congressional elections.
