South Korea has pledged to triple its development aid to resource-rich Africa to a total of 100 million dollars by 2008.
The announcement to increase aid was made today (Wednesday) during a Korea-Africa Forum in Seoul. Experts and leaders from more than 20 African nations attended the meeting.
The pledge confirms a promise made by South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun when he visited Nigeria in March.
South Korean officials say they are searching for mutually beneficial ways to forge cooperation with countries in Africa.
Seoul depends entirely on oil imports to meet its energy needs. It has been trying to improve its relations with Africa to diversify the source of its energy and lower dependence on crude oil imports from the Middle East.
