파키스탄의 페르베즈 무샤라프 (Pervez Musharraf) 대통령은 이슬람권은 회교가 과격 극단주의를 옹호하는 종교라는 서방측의 잘못된 인식을 바로잡아야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
무샤라프 대통령은 6일 파키스탄의 수도 이슬라마바드에서 열린 ‘세계 이슬람 경제포럼 (World Islamic Economic Forum)’에서 이같이 말하고 이슬람권에서의 극단주의는 글을 잘 읽지 못하면서도 군중을 선동하는 성직자들에 의해 확산됐다고 말했습니다.
무샤라프 대통령은 또 이날 연설에서 전세계 57개 이슬람 국가들의 통합 국민총생산 GNP는 단일 유럽 국가인 독일에도 미치지 못한다면서 이슬람권의 사회와 경제에 대한 어두운 전망을 내놓았습니다.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says the Muslim world must correct Western misperceptions created by clerics about Islam as a religion that fosters militant extremism.
He told a meeting of the World Islamic Economic Forum in Islamabad the rise in extremism in the Muslim world has been caused by semi-literate clerics who hold sway over the masses.
He said this is the critical malaise that spawns terrorism. In a wide-ranging speech, General Musharraf painted a bleak picture of the social and economic prospects facing the world's 57 Muslim nations, pointing out that their combined gross national products were less than that of a single European nation, Germany.
He also urged Muslim nations to fight corruption, set up good governance and empower women in order to achieve economic development.
