유엔 산하 세계보건기구 WHO 집행이사회가 새로운 사무총장을 뽑기 위한 최종 작업을 벌이고 있습니다.
관계자들은 34명의 이사를 둔 세계보건기구 집행이사회는 6일 스위스 제네바에서 11명의 차기 사무총장 후보자 명단을 5명으로 추리는 비공식 작업에 들어갔다고 밝혔습니다. 최종 단일 후보는 8일 이들 5명 가운데 선출될 예정입니다.
선정 작업은 9일, 세계보건기구의 193개 회원국들이 차기 사무총장을 선출함으로써 종료될 예정입니다.
후보자들은 아프리카, 아시아, 유럽, 그리고 중남미 지역 출신으로 지난 5월 한국의 이종욱 전 세계보건기구 사무총장의 갑작스런 사망으로 공석이 된 사무총장직에 도전장을 던졌습니다.

The governing council of the World Health Organization has begun its final selection process to choose a new director-general.
Officials say 11 candidates were to be pared to a short list of five today (Monday) by the organization's 34-member executive board meeting behind closed doors in Geneva. Those five will be pared to a single candidate on Wednesday.
The selections process is to end Thursday, when 193 member-states vote on the remaining candidate.
Candidates from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America are seeking to fill the leadership slot left vacant by the unexpected death of Director-General Lee Jong-wook in May.
