축출된 이라크 전 지도자, 사담 후세인이 반 인륜 혐의로 교수형을 선고받음에 따라 이라크 내 시아파 주민들은 축제 분위기에 휩싸였습니다.
이라크 고등법원은 24년전인 지난 1982년 사담 후세인이 자신을 암살하려 시도했다는 이유로 두자일 마을의 시아파 주민 백48명을 학살하도록 명령한데 대해 유죄판결을 내렸습니다.
올해 69세인 사담 후세인은 판사가 판결문을 읽는 동안 내내 ‘신은 위대하다’, ‘이라크여 영원하라’고 외쳤습니다.
이라크의 누리 알-말리키 총리는 선고공판이 끝난 후 텔레비젼으로 방영된 대 국민 연설에서 이번 판결은 사담 후세인 뿐만 아니라 암흑 시대였던 사담 후세인의 전 통치기간에 대한 판결이라고 말했습니다.
말리키 총리는 사담 후세인 전 대통령이 처형되면 사담 후세인 정권 당시 살해됐던 희생자 수천명의 가족들에게 위안이 될 지 모른다고 말했습니다.
이날 사형 선고를 받은 사담 후세인과 그의 전 측근들은 모두 항소했으며 항소심 과정은 앞으로 4주 동안 걸릴 것으로 보입니다.

An Iraqi court has sentenced ousted leader Saddam Hussein to death for crimes against humanity, setting off celebrations in Shi'ite-dominated areas of the country.
Iraq's High Tribunal convicted Saddam of ordering the killing of 148 Shi'ite villagers 24 years ago, in a brutal reprisal for a failed attempt to assassinate him (near the village of Dujail).
As the guilty verdict and sentence of death on the gallows (death by hanging) was read aloud in the Baghdad court today (Sunday), the 69-year-old former dictator tried to drown out the judge with repeated shouts of "Long Live Iraq" and "God is Great."
Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, addressed the nation (on television) afterwards, saying the court verdict was aimed not only at Saddam, but also at the entire "dark" period of his rule.
Mr. Maliki says Saddam's eventual execution may provide comfort to families of the many thousands of people killed by his regime.
Today's death sentence immediately triggered an automatic appeal process, expected to last about four weeks.
