A new national poll indicates a majority of voters plan to support Democrats in next week's U.S. elections, mostly because of anger over the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

The New York Times - CBS News poll released today (Thursday) shows 52 percent of registered voters polled say they would vote for Democrats, while 33 percent indicate they would support Republicans.

The poll indicates voters believe Democrats would end or reduce U.S. military involvement in Iraq.

The survey showed 50 percent of independent voters say they would support a Democratic candidate versus 23 percent who say they would vote for a Republican.

The pollsters note the national survey does not reflect voter opinions on the hundreds of specific congressional races where local personalities and issues can shape the outcomes.

President Bush, meanwhile, is spending the day campaigning for congressional candidates in Montana and Nevada. Friday he is scheduled to campaign in Missouri, the scene of a closely-contested Senate race.
