하타미 전 이란 대통령은 중동지역에 서방세계와 같은 민주국가를 수립하겠다는 생각은 웃음거리 밖에 안된다고 말했습니다.
하타미 전 대통령은 1일 영국 런던의 대외정책 연구소-채텀 하우스에서 연설하면서 민주주의는 서방국가가 다른 문화와 전통을 가진 지역에 수출할 수 있는 성격이 아니라고 말했습니다.
하타미 전 이란 대통령은 민주주의 개념을 지지하긴 하지만 회교권 현지 상황에 맞게 수정돼야한다고 말했습니다.
하타미 전 이란 대통령은 이날 연설에서 미군이 중동지역에 주둔하면서 테러위협은 도리어 더욱 증대대되었다며 미국의 주도아래 단행된 이라크 침공을 비판했습니다.

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has ridiculed U.S. President George W. Bush's goal of building democracy in the Middle East.
Mr. Khatami says efforts to impose Western-style democacy in the region are "a joke" The former Iranian leader made the comment Wednesday in London in a speech to a foreign policy institute (Chatham House).
Mr. Khatami says democracy is not something that the West can export to another geographical area with different cultures and traditions. He says that while he supports the concept of democracy, he believes it should also be tailored to suit the conditions of the Islamic world.
In his speech, Mr. Khatami criticized the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, saying the American presence in the region has only increased the threat of terrorism.
