(Eng)

South Korea and Japan have welcomed North Korea back to multilateral talks on its nuclear program but they say that they will continue to enforce sanctions imposed on Pyongyang after its nuclear test.

South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan warned today (Wednesday) that U.N. sanctions on North Korea will only be lessened if the six-nation talks are productive in eliminating Pyongyang's nuclear capabilities. Japan's government spokesman (Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki) issued the same message in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, South Korean Foreign Minister (and incoming U.N. Secretary General) Ban Ki-Moon is in Moscow meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement also welcoming North Korea's return to the talks and urging negotiations to resume as soon as possible.

Mr. Putin told Ban that Moscow is closely watching developments on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea said today (Wednesday) that it will return to the talks as long as the issue of lifting financial sanctions imposed by the United States will be discussed during the negotiations.
