China is warning the United States against selling weapons to Taiwan, saying the deal would compromise Chinese national security.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said today (Tuesday) that such a sale would violate Washington's pledge not to sell arms to Taiwan. He said it would also block mainland China's efforts to reunify with the island nation Beijing considers a renegade province.
Last week, Washington's top envoy to Taipei, Stephen Young, urged Taiwan to approve a multi-billion dollar budget to buy new weapons to counter China's military buildup.
Li said China has lodged a formal protest against Young's remarks.
