Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says all of the 80 people killed in an attack on a madrassa (Islamic seminary) near the Afghan border were militants undergoing terror training.
In his first comments since Monday's air strike in the Bajaur tribal district, General Musharraf said the militants had been under close surveillance for the last six or seven days before the raid.
Pakistani forces, in the president's words, knew exactly who was at the school and what they were doing.
Later, a security official, requesting anonymity, told reporters al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri, and the al-Qaida mastermind of the London terror plot, Abu Ubaidah al-Masri, frequently visited the madrassa. But he said they were not there during the raid. He said Abu Ubaidah heads al-Qaida operations in Afghanistan's Kunar province that borders the Bajaur region.
