미국측 수석 대표인 크리스토퍼 힐 미 국무부 동아시아 태평양 차관보는 중국수도 베이징에서 기자들에게 이 같은 합의는 미국과 북한, 그리고 중국사이에 7시간 동안 진행된 비공식 논의끝에 이루어졌다고 말했습니다. 이날 3자 회동은 중국에 의해 주선되었습니다.
한편, 조지 부시 미국 대통령은 백악관에서 북한의 회담 복귀 소식에 기쁨을 표시하면서도 아직 많은 과제들이 남아 있다고 말했습니다. 한국도 북한의 회담 복귀 소식을 환영하면서, 한반도에서 북핵 문제 해결에 돌파구가 이루어질것을 시사한다고 말했습니다.
한편, 일본의 아소 다로 외상은 북한이 여전히 핵무기를 보유하고 있다면 회담장으로의 복귀가 허용되지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 북한을 제외한 6자회담의 5개 참가국들은 그 점이 북한의 회담복귀를 위한 주요조건이 라는 점에 의견을 같이했다고 아소 외상은 일본 국영 방송인 NHK가 방영한 기자회견에서 말했습니다.

Negotiators say North Korea has agreed to return to six-party talks aimed at ending that nation's nuclear program, with negotiations expected to resume as early as next month.
The top U.S. envoy to the talks, Christopher Hill, told reporters the decision came after a seven-hour informal meeting today (Tuesday) in Beijing involving North Korea, China and the United States. The meeting was organized by China.
At the White House today, President Bush expressed his pleasure at the news but said a lot of work remains to be done. South Korea also welcomed the move, saying perhaps it indicated a breakthrough towards settling the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
Meanwhile, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso has said North Korea will not be allowed back to the talks if it still possesses nuclear weapons. In a news conference broadcast today on Japan's NHK television, Mr. Aso said the other five nations in the talks have agreed this would be a major condition for resuming the talks.
