Egypt has deployed some five-thousand paramilitary police near its border with the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip following reports that Israel is considering military action to halt cross-border weapons smuggling.
Israeli media say Israeli military officials believe Palestinian militants have smuggled tons of weapons and explosives during the past year through hundreds of cross-border tunnels.
An Israeli spokesman says Israel hopes to stop the smuggling through diplomatic means but also is considering military options, including airstrikes.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked Israel to allow a brigade of Palestinian troops to enter Gaza from Jordan.
Palestinian officials say Mr. Abbas wants to use the troops to strengthen his position in a power struggle with the ruling Hamas group.
