유엔은 아시아 지역에서 조류독감 확산 방지 노력이 많은 진전을 보이고 있으나, 인도네시아는 여전히 우려 국가로 남아있다고 밝혔습니다.
유엔 내 조류독감 담당자인 데이빗 나바로 조정관은 최근 조류 독감 대비 상황을 조사하기 위해 네 번째 아시아 방문을 한 후 이같이 말했습니다.
나바로 조정관은 베트남과 캄보디아의 대비 태세를 높이 평가했으며, 버마도 조류독감과 관련해서 국제사회와 공동 대응 노력을 벌이고 있다고 말했습니다.
하지만 인도네시아는 아직 부족한 점이 많다는 것이 나바로 조정관의 평가입니다. 인도네시아는 조류독감으로 모두 55명이 숨져서 세계에서 가장 높은 희생자를 냈습니다. 유엔에 따르면 전국 33개 지역의 대부분에서 조류독감 발병 사례가 보고됐습니다.
조류독감은 지난 3년간 전세계적으로 149명의 사망자를 냈습니다. 대부분의 희생자는 병을 앓거나 병으로 죽은 새와 접촉한 후 바이러스에 감염됐습니다.

The United Nations' top bird flu official says Asia has made good overall progress in fighting the spread of the disease, but Indonesia remains a concern.
Senior U.N. Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza David Nabarro is on his fourth trip to Asia to review bird flu preparations there.
He praised Vietnam and Cambodia for their preparedness, and Burma for its open and cooperative approach to the issue. But Nabarro says there is a still a lot to do in Indonesia.
The country has at least 55 recorded bird-flu-related deaths -- the highest number in the world. U.N. officials say the majority of the nation's 33 provinces have avian flu cases.
The disease has killed at least 149 people worldwide over the past three years. Most victims contract the virus from dead or sick birds.
