북대서양조약기구 나토의 야프 데 후프 슈에페르 사무총장은 19일 일부 회원국이 아프가니스탄에 추가 파병 의사를 밝혔으나 아직 목표에는 도달하지 못하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
나토군은 현재 창설 이후 역사상 가장 많은 병력을 아프간에 파병하고 있으며 나토군 사령관들은 탈레반 저항세력과의 전투가 예상보다 격렬하게 진행되고 있다고 말하고 있습니다.
한편 아프가니스탄에서 19일 두 건의 자살 폭탄 공격이 발생해 경찰 1명과 최소한 민간인 2명이 사망했습니다.
아프간 관리들은 한 남성이 남동부 코스트시 교외의 한 도로에서 몸에 두른 폭발물을 터트려 경찰 한 명이 사망하고 다른 4명이 다쳤다고 말했습니다.
앞서 남부 헬만두주의 주도인 라슈카르 가에서 한 남성이 북대서양조약기구 나토군 호송차량 근처에서 폭탄을 안고 자폭했습니다. 이 자살 폭탄 공격으로 어린이 2명이 숨지고 나토군 병사를 포함해 여러명이 부상했습니다.
영국 국방부는 이번 공격으로 영국 병사들이 경상을 입었다고 밝혔습니다.

The alliance is involved in the biggest ground war in its history in Afghanistan, and its commanders say fighting against Taleban insurgents has been more intense than they expected.
Earlier Thursday, Afghan officials said two separate suicide bombings killed one policeman and at least two civilians.
The police officer died and four other people were wounded when a man detonated explosives strapped to his body in the southeastern town of Khost.
Another suicide bomber blew himself up near a NATO troop convoy in the town of Lashkar Gah -- the capital of southern Helmand province. Two children were killed and several people were wounded, including NATO soldiers.
