한국의 반기문 외교부 장관이 13일 유엔총회에서 제 8대 사무총장으로 공식 선출됐습니다. 유엔안보리에 의해 단일 후보로 추천된 반 장관은 이날 총회에서 유엔 회원국들의 추인을 받았습니다.
반 장관은 이에 따라 내정자 자격으로 인수 작업에 들어가며 내년 1월부터 코피 아난 현 사무총장의 뒤를 이어 공식 확동을 시작하게 됩니다.
반 장관은 향후 북한 핵 문제를 포함한 국제 분쟁을 풀어갈 핵심 역할을 할 것으로 기대됩니다.
반 장관은 2004년 한국 외무부 장관으로 임명됐으며, 지난해 6자회담에서 북핵 공동성명을 이끌어내는 데 결정적인 지도적인 역할을 했습니다.
반 장관은1961년부터 10년간 사무총장으로 재직한 버마의 유 탄 사무총장에 이어 아시아계로는 두 번째 사무총장으로 선출됐습니다.

The United Nations General Assembly has formally elected South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon as the world body's Secretary General.
He will succeed outgoing U.N. leader Kofi Annan on January first.
Ban is expected to play a key role in efforts to resolve international conflicts, including the North Korean nuclear dispute.
The seasoned diplomat became South Korea's foreign minister in 2004, and played a leading role in reaching an agreement last year between North Korea and members of the six-party talks to halt Pyongyang's nuclear development program. The talks have since stalled, but Ban continues to call on North Korea to return to discussions.
Ban will become the first South Korean to take the much-coveted post. He will be the second Asian, after U Thant of Burma, who served from 1961 to 1971.
