Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting the southern German state of Bavaria today (Wednesday) for talks with local business and political leaders on boosting trade and investment.
Mr. Putin is keen to promote economic and energy links with Germany, which is Russia's largest trading partner.
Russian trade with Bavarian companies currently makes up at least 14 percent of Russia's total trade with Germany. Bavarian firms also account for almost one-third of all German investments in Russia.
The Russian president announced Tuesday that Moscow will boost natural gas exports to Germany by sending gas from the Shtokman field, under the Barents Sea. He said the move will enable German companies to distribute gas to the rest of Europe.
Mr. Putin spoke after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the eastern German city of Dresden.
