미국, 영국, 독일, 러시아, 중국, 프랑스 등 이른바 이란 핵 '섹스텟(sextet)' 대표들이 이란의 핵 농축활동 저지를 위한 회담을 6일 런던에서 시작됐습니다.
한편 마가렛 벡켓 영국 외무장관은 회담에 앞서 6일 이번 모임에서 중대한 정책 결정은 내려지지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 벡켓 장관은 하비에르 솔라나 EU 외교정책 담당 집행위원이 그 동안 이란 당국과의 협상 진행 상황에 대해 참가국들에게 설명할 것이라고 말했습니다.
미 국무부는 중동을 방문 중인 콘돌리자 라이스 미 국무부 장관도 회담에 참석할 예정이었으나, 기술적 문제로 다음 주 회담으로 참석을 미루기로 했다고 말했습니다.
미국과 영국은 이란의 핵 농축 활동을 저지하기 위해 국제 사회의 제재를 추진하고 있습니다. 한편 러시아 정부 관계자는 러시아가 중국과 함께 이란에 대한 제재에 반대하고 있다는 입장을 밝혔습니다.

World powers have opened talks in London to discuss recent negotiations aimed at convincing Iran to abandon uranium enrichment.
Britain's Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett told reporters today (Friday) she did not expect any major policy decisions to be reached at the meeting.
She said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana will brief diplomats on recent talks with Iranian officials.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was expected to arrive late to the meeting, because of a technical problem with a plane carrying her from Iraq.
A State Department spokesman said he expected more talks next week between the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (United States, Russia, Britain, France and China) plus Germany.
The U.S. and Britain are pressing for international sanctions to stop Iran's enrichment activity.
Russia's deputy foreign minister (Alexander Alexeyev) said today his country and China oppose threats or the use of force against Iran.
