태국의 군사 구테타를 주동했던 손티 부냐랏그린 장군은 태국 남부에서 수백명을 살해했던 저항 세력의 지도자들과 회담을 가지기로 합의했습니다.
손티 장군은 5일 이번 회담은 협상이 아니라고 말했지만 저항 단체들은 이번 회담이 거의 3년에 걸친 유혈 참사를 종식하는 유일한 방법으로 생각하고 있습니다.
손티 장군은 지난 달 군사 구테타를 주도해 탁신 쉬나와트라 총리를 퇴역 육군 장성인 수라윳 출라논 추밀원 고문으로 교체시켰습니다. 수라윳 신임 총리는 자신의 새 정부는 2004년 이래 폭탄 공격과 총격으로 약 1천 6백명이 사망한 빠따니와 나라티왓 그리고 얄라 지역을 안정시키기 위해 노력할 것이라고 말했습니다.
이 세 지역의 주민들은 대부분 회교도인 반면 태국 나머지 지역은 주로 불교입니다.

The general who led Thailand's military coup says he has agreed to hold talks with leaders of an insurgency that has killed hundreds of people in the south of the country.
General Sondhi Boonyaratglin said today (Thursday) the talks will not be negotiations. He said the rebel groups believe talks are the only way to end almost three years of bloodshed.
Sondhi led a coup last month that replaced Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra with Surayud Chulanont, a former army chief.
Mr. Surayud has said his new government will work to stabilize the provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, where some 16-hundred people have died in bomb and gun attacks since 2004.
Most people in the three provinces are Muslim, while the rest of Thailand is mainly Buddhist.
