Authorities in Georgia say four detained Russian army officers have been formally charged with espionage.
Reports say the servicemen are to appear in a court in Tbilisi today (Friday) for the first time since they were arrested Wednesday. They are expected to remain in pre-trial custody for two months. A fifth serviceman (Ruslan Skrilnikov) was released without charges earlier today (Friday).
Georgia's Interior Ministry released video and audio recordings it says prove the army officers were spying. The Russians are accused of collecting information about Georgia's military and defense capabilities, its energy security, and the country's political parties.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the charges against the men, "absurd."
In response to the arrests, Moscow today (Friday) began evacuating about 100 embassy personnel and their families from Tbilisi one day after recalling its ambassador from Georgia.
