나토 26개국 국방장관들은 나토가 아프가니스탄 동부 지역 지휘권을 갖는데 합의했습니다.
나토 국방장관들은 28일 슬로베니아 포르토로츠에서 열린 회동에서 동부 아프가니스탄 지역에 주둔하고 있는 1만명 규모의 미국군 지휘권을 나토가 이양 받도록 합의했습니다. 이에 따라 나토는 아프가니스탄 전지역의 평화 유지 임무를 관할하게 됐습니다.
이 날 결정은 최근 탈레반 무장세력의 저항이 더욱 강해지며 이를 저지하기 위해 추가 병력과 지원이 필요하다는 나토군 지휘관들의 요청에 따라 내려진 것입니다. 한편 폴란드는 내년까지 1천명의 병력을 추가 배치하기로 결정했습니다.
나토는 2001년 미군에 의해 탈레반 정권이 축출된 후 아프가니스탄 내 작전 범위를 꾸준히 확대해 왔습니다.

Defense ministers of the 26 NATO countries have agreed to formally give the alliance command of operations in eastern Afghanistan.
The decision, at a meeting in the Slovenian seaside resort of Portoroz, transfers to NATO command about 10-thousand U.S. troops in eastern Afghanistan and puts the alliance in charge of peacekeeping operations throughout the country.
The move comes as the alliance seeks to fend off surprisingly strong resistance by Taleban militants in the area and respond to calls by NATO commanders for additional troops to help deal with the situation. Poland has responded, offering to send about a thousand new troops by early next year.
NATO has been expanding its operations in Afghanistan since U.S.-led troops ousted the Taleban in 2001.
