Saudi Arabia says it has no evidence to support recent media reports that Osama bin Laden is dead.
The Saudi Embassy in Washington issued a statement today (Sunday) saying recently published information on the al-Qaida leader's alleged demise is "purely speculative and cannot be independently verified."
A French newspaper (L'Est Republicain) published a story based on a classified French intelligence report saying Saudi officials believed bin Laden had died of typhoid in Pakistan within the past month.
French President Jacques Chirac said the report has not been confirmed and promised an investigation into how secret information had been published.
The White House also said it could not confirm the report, while U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declined comment.
