조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 파키스탄의 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령이 미국 주도의 테러와의 전쟁에 동참해 미국과의 관계를 강화하는 외국 지도자가운데 한 명이 되고 있다며 그에게 찬사를 보냈습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 22일 백악관에서 무샤라프 대통령과 다양한 국제 현안에 관해 정상회담을 갖은뒤 기자회견에서 이같이 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 미국이 9.11 테러 공격을 당한이후 파키스탄에 테러와의 전쟁에 협력하지 않으면 폭격을 가하겠다며 위협했다는 최근 언론 보도에 대해 매우 당황했다고 덧붙였습니다.
앞서 미국의 CBS 텔레비젼 방송은 리챠드 아미티지 전 국무부 부장관이 당시 파키스탄에 그러한 위협을 가했다고 무샤라프 대통령이 말했다고 보도했습니다. 무샤라프 대통령은 아미티지 전 부장관이 자신에게 테러와의 전쟁에 협력하지 않으면 파키스탄을 폭격해 석기시대로 돌아가게 할 것이라고 위협했다고 말했습니다.
아미티지 전 부장관은 그러나 22일 자신은 파키스탄에 폭격을 가하겠다는 위협을 결코 하지 않았다고 말했습니다. 아미티지 전 부장관은 그러나 당시 파키스탄에 미국과 함께하던지 아니면 미국에 대항하던지 양자 택일하라는 강력한 메시지를 전달했다고 말했습니다.
무샤라프 대통령은 그러나 이날 정상회담후 가진 기자회견에서 CBS 방송 인터뷰에 관해 아무런 언급을 하지 않았습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이날 무샤라프 대통령이 국경지역에서 수백명의 알 케에다 지도자들을 체포했다며 그에 대해 찬사를 거듭 보냈습니다.
양국 정상은 이날 기자들에게 회담이 진솔했으며 서로에 대한 자신감과 신뢰를 재확인한 자리가됐다고 말했습니다.

President Bush has praised his Pakistani counterpart, Pervez Musharraf, for being one of the first foreign leaders to "step up" and join the U.S.-led war on terrorism.
Mr. Bush made the remark to reporters at the White House today (Friday), after the two men held wide-ranging talks on international and regional issues. The U.S. president said he was "taken aback" by reports that the United States threatened to bomb Pakistan if it did not cooperate after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.
In an earlier interview with CBS Television, General Musharraf said then-Deputy U.S. Secretary of State Richard Armitage made the threat. He said Armitage threatened to "bomb Pakistan back to the Stone Age" if it did not cooperate in the war on terrorism.
Armitage said today he never threatened that the U.S. would bomb Pakistan. But he said he gave a tough message, saying either Pakistan is "with us or against us."
President Musharraf declined to comment on his CBS interview when he and President Bush faced reporters. Mr. Bush has repeatedly praised the Pakistani leader for arresting hundreds of al-Qaida leaders within his country's borders.
The two leaders told reporters their talks were candid, and that they reinforced trust and confidence in each other.
President Musharraf said both Washington and Islamabad are on a joint hunt for Osama bin Laden, and that there is no need for publicly discussing the strategy and the tactics of that hunt.
