Pope Benedict has expressed a deep respect for Islam during his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
The pontiff said today (Wednesday) that his controversial speech to a German university last week was intended as a call for dialogue among the world's religions. He said he deeply respects the followers of all faiths, particularly Muslims.
Benedict says a medieval quote he used in his speech linking Islam to violence was misunderstood, and does not reflect his personal views.
The pope has already said he his deeply sorry for the reaction to the address, which sparked several days of protests in Muslim countries.
The controversial quote used by Benedict is from a 14th century Byzantine emperor, who called some of the teachings of the prophet Muhammad evil and inhumane.
