An international study on landmines shows that deminers cleared a record amount of territory in 2005.
In a report issued today (Wednesday), the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (I.C.B.L.) says the area cleared of mines around the world was 740 square kilometers -- roughly the size of New York City.
However, the group says funding for demining work declined in 2005. The report says international donors should offer more money to help countries meet deadlines to clear minefields.
The study also says the number of casualties from landmines increased by 11 percent last year, to about seven-thousand-300. Of those, two-thousand people were killed. About 80-percent of landmine casualties were civilians.
The group says landmines continued to be deployed last year by governments in Burma, Nepal and Russia, which have not signed the 1997 Ottawa Convention banning mine use.
