지난 2001년 9월 11일 미국에 대한 테러 공격 5주년을 하루 앞둔 10일 미국의 조지 부쉬 행정부는 국내외 테러 퇴치 노력이 진전을 이루고 있다고 말했습니다. 미국의 딕 체니 부통령은 10일 미국 텔레비전 방송에 출연해 그같이 말했습니다.
체니 부통령은 9-11 테러 공격이후 지난 5년 동안 미국은 나라를 보다 안전하게 만들기 위해 수십억 달러를 지출해 왔으며 그 같은 투자는 가치가 있는 것으로 입증되고 있다고 말했습니다.
체니 부통령은 미국을 테러 분자들로부터 보호하는데 있어 부쉬 행정부는 상당히 훌륭한 성과를 거둔 것으로 본다면서 9-11 테러 공격 5주년을 맞은 지금까지 미국에 대한 또다른 공격은 없었다고 말했습니다. 체니 부통령은 NBC-TV의 ‘언론과의 만남’ 이라는 프로그램에 출연해 그같이 말했습니다.
체니 부통령은 미국의 테러 퇴치 노력은 국토 안보국 창설과 국내외 테러 활동들에 대한 추적 및 감시, 그리고 테러와의 전쟁에서 생포 또는 수감된 자들에 대한 심문 등으로 도움을 받아왔다고 말했습니다.
또한 체니 부통령은 사전 대책을 강구한 대외 정책에 힘입어 미국은 보다 안전해지고 있다고 말했습니다.
체니 부통령은 미국이 이라크나 아프가니스탄을 지키려는 불굴의 의지를 점차 상실해가고 있다는 모든 조짐은 테러분자들을 대담하게 만들 뿐더러 회교세계내 미국 동맹국들에게도 피해를 줄 것이라고 말했습니다.

On the eve of the five-year anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, the Bush administration says anti-terror efforts are making progress at home and abroad. Vice President Cheney appeared on U.S. television.
Vice President Cheney says during the past five years the United States has spent billions of dollars to make the nation more secure, and the investment has proven its worth.
"I think we have done a pretty good job of securing the nation against terrorists. We are on the fifth anniversary [of 9/11] and there has not been another attack on the United States.
Cheney was speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press" program. He said U.S. anti-terror efforts have been aided by the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, by programs to track and monitor terrorist activities at home and abroad, and by interrogating those captured or detained in the war on terrorism.
In addition, the vice president said the United States is safer thanks to a proactive foreign policy.
The vice president added that any sign that the United States is losing its resolve to persevere in Iraq or Afghanistan would embolden terrorists and undermine America's allies in the Muslim world.
