유얀 씨는 공용어를 말할 수 없는 이들 중국민들이 국가의 사회적 경제적 발전의 걸림돌이 되고 있다고 말했습니다.
중국 정부는 여러 다양한 인종들이 사용하고 있는 방언을 통합하기 위해 지난 1956년 만다린어를 공식 언어로 채택하고, 만다린어의 사용을 장려해왔습니다.

A senior Chinese official says at least 40 percent of China's population cannot speak Mandarin, the country's official language.
The China Daily newspaper quotes the official (Yuan Zhongrui) as saying a recent study by the Ministry of Education shows most Chinese who cannot speak Mandarin are poorly-educated or illiterate residents of rural areas.
The education official says the inability of Chinese citizens to communicate in a common language has become an obstacle to the country's social and economic development.
China's government began to promote Mandarin as a common language in 1956 to unite a diverse population speaking a wide variety of dialects. About 80 languages and dialects are currently spoken in China.
China begins a week of special activities to encourage Mandarin usage on Sunday. The activities will include language contests and art performances.
