Chief Cabinet secretary Shinzo Abe announced his candidacy today (Friday) to become president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Whoever leads the L.D.P. is virtually assured of being prime minister, because the party has a solid majority in Japan's lower house of parliament.
In making his announcement (at a party meeting in the southern Japanese city of Hiroshima), Abe said he hopes to improve Japan's relations with China and South Korea. He also said he plans to lead Japan into a more prominent role in the world's diplomatic affairs.
Opinion polls consistently show Abe far ahead of his older rivals, Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki and Foreign Minister Taro Aso.
Abe is 51 years old, a political conservative and is considered Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's top aide.
