유럽연합 회원국들은 레바논 남부지역에 추가파견되는 유엔 평화유지군에 약 7천 명의 병력을 보내기로 약속했습니다.
코피 아난 유엔 사무총장은 25일, 브뤼셀에서 유럽연합 관계관들과 회담을 가진뒤 유럽연합의 평화유지군 병력파견 규모를 밝히면서 처음에 프랑스가 2007년 2월까지 사령관직을 맡고 그 다음에 이탈리아가 사령관직을 넘겨받게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
이스라엘-헤즈볼라간 전투종식에 관한 유엔 안전보장이사회 결의는 레바논군 병력과 함께 유엔 평화유지군 병력 1만5천 명을 추가파견토록 규정했으나 프랑스의 작크 시락 대통령은 평화유지군이 1만5천 명까지 필요로 하지 않는다고 주장했었습니다.
프랑스는 처음엔 150명의 병력을 파견하겠다고 발표했다가 나중에 2천 명을 파견하기로 방침을 바꿨습니다.

European Union officials say member states have pledged nearly seven thousand troops for the expanded United Nations peace-keeping force in southern Lebanon.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said today (Friday) he has asked France to lead the force in Lebanon until February 2007, and then Italy will take command.
Mr. Annan spoke in Brussels where he attended a meeting of E.U. foreign ministers to discuss contributions to the U.N. force.
A U.N resolution on ending the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas called for up to 15-thousand U.N troops, alongside an equal number of Lebanese soldiers.
But France's President Jacques Chirac said the peacekeeping force does not need 15-thousand troops. He called that number excessive.
On Thursday, France boosted its troop commitment to two thousand. A contingent of about 150 French troops reached southern Lebanon at the coastal town of Naqura today. Italy has offered up to three-thousand troops.
