이탈리아는 3천명의 자국국 병력을 유엔 평화유지군의 일부로 레바논에 파견해 이스라엘이 휴전 협정을 준수하도록 할 지도 모른다고 마시모 달레마 외무장관이 밝혔습니다. 달레마 외무장관은 이탈리아의 라 레버플리카 신문 20일자에 게재된 대담에서 이같이 밝혔습니다.
달레마 외무장관은 헤즈볼라에게 무기를 포기하라고 하는 요구는 옳은 것이라고 말하고, 이탈리아는 그러나, 이스라엘 무장 병력이 전투를 계속하면 병력을 파견할 수 없다고 강조했습니다. 이스라엘 사령부는 지난 19일 레바논 동부 바카 계곡에서 기습 작전을 전개했습니다.
유엔은 이 기습 공격이 휴전 협정에 위배되는 것이라고 지적했습니다. 이스라엘과 헤즈볼라간의 전투 종식에 관한 유엔 안보리결의안은 현재 레바논 남부 지역에 주둔중인 유엔 평화 유지 병력을 최고 만 5천명의 추가 병력으로 강화되기를 요구하고 있습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 추가 병력이 시급히 필요하며 레바논의 자유를 위해 필수적이라고 말하고 있습니다.

Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema says Italy may contribute up to three thousand troops to a U.N. force in Lebanon, provided Israel respects the ceasefire.
D'Alema made the comment in an interview with Italy's La Repubblica newspaper published today (Tuesday).
He said it is right to demand that Hezbollah give up its weapons, but Italy cannot send troops while Israeli "armed forces continue to fire."
Israeli commandos staged a raid Saturday in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley. The United Nations called the raid a violation of the ceasefire.
A U.N. Security Council resolution on ending the Israeli-Hezbollah war calls for the current U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon to be strengthened by up to 15-thousand additional troops.
On Monday, Italy said it is willing to command the international force. Previously, France was expected to lead the peacekeepers, but Paris is only committing a few hundred troops.
