The commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East says Iraq could slide into civil war if sectarian violence is not stopped.
General John Abizaid told a Congressional hearing today (Thursday) that sectarian violence in Iraq is probably as bad as he has ever seen it. But he expressed confidence that more people are trying to hold the country together than tear it apart.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was asked at the hearing how the U.S. military plans to react to the upsurge in sectarian fighting, in light of recent comments by a U.S. general who said he had never received training to deal with sectarianism. Mr. Rumsfeld said the problem must be solved politically by the Iraqi government.
