부쉬 대통령은 자신과 블레어 영국 총리는 이스라엘과 헤즈볼라간의 전투로 피해를 받은 사람들에게 인도적 구호품을 전달하기 위해 다국적군을 레바논에 파병해야한다는데 동의했다고 말했습니다.
두 정상은 28일 백악관에서 만나 여러가지 현안을 논의했지만 중동 위기사태가 주요 의제였습니다.
부쉬 대통령과 블레어 총리는 세계 여러 나라들이 요구하는 즉각적인 정전을 거부하고 있어 국제적인 비판을 받아왔습니다. 하지만 블레어 총리는 양국 정상은 중동 사태에 장기적인 해결책을 제시하여 이 지역에 팔레스타인 국가가 설립되도록 하는 기회를 추진하는 것을 믿고 있다고 말했습니다.
양정상은 또 부쉬 대통령이 소위 말하는 레바논 영토에 대한 “전권”을 레바논 정부가 가질수 있도록 지원할 필요성이 있음을 강조했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 콘돌리자 라이스 미 국무장관이 이스라엘과 레바논에 거점을 둔 헤즈볼라 게릴라 사이의 갈등을 해결하기 위한 추가 회담을 위해 29일 중동으로 향할 것이라고 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 유엔 안전보장이사회가 적대행위의 중단을 위한 구조를 논의하기 위해 다음주에 만날 예정으로 있다고 말했습니다.

President Bush says he and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have agreed on three major goals in the Middle East crisis: stopping the violence, distributing humanitarian aid, and assisting with reconstruction in Lebanon.
The two leaders met today at the White House. Afterward in a press conference, Mr. Blair called the situation in Lebanon "a crisis." Both men expressed support for the government of Lebanon and said an international force must be dispatched quickly to help Lebanon gain control over its borders.
Mr. Bush also announced Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will return to the mideast on Saturday for more talks on resolving the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas based in Lebanon.
Both President Bush and Prime Minister Blair have come under international criticism for refusing to join world-wide calls for an immediate cease-fire. Mr. Blair said both leaders believe in taking the opportunity to push a long-term solution to the Middle East crisis that would create a Palestinian state in the region.
