President Bush has repeated his stance that Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorist attacks.
Mr. Bush today (Saturday) used his weekly radio address to talk about Israel's ongoing battle with Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. Mr. Bush said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will use her upcoming trip to the region to make clear that ending the violence means confronting Hezbollah and the countries that back it -- Iran and Syria.
Mr. Bush says Hezbollah has jeopardized Lebanon's advances and betrayed the Lebanese people.
Rice leaves for the Middle East on Sunday. She has warned that an immediate ceasefire would be little more than a "false promise" without addressing the root cause of the problem. She says the United States urgently seeks an end to the violence and a way to create the conditions for stability and lasting peace.
But French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy has called for an immediate ceasefire. He says the conflict risks destroying Lebanon. He spoke in Cairo after talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit.
