The final contingent of Japanese troops has left Iraq, marking the end of the country's largest overseas military involvement since World War Two.

The Japanese soldiers were based in the southern Iraqi city of Samawah and arrived in Kuwait today (Monday).

The troops were non-combat personnel, stationed for humanitarian purposes. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent 600 soldiers to southern Iraq in 2004 to aid in reconstruction after the 2003 U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Japan's air force will remain involved in Iraq, ferrying goods and personnel for the U.S.-led coalition.
