러시아에서 만나고 있는 G-8 정상들은 중동지역내 이른바 과격분자들과 이스라엘군 사이의 폭력 사태 중단을 촉구했습니다.
G-8 지도자들은 16일 성명을 발표하고 레바논의 세즈볼라와 팔레스타인 세력에 의해 납치된 이스라엘 병사들의 안전한 귀환을 촉구했습니다. 이들은 또한 이스라엘에 대해 팔레스타인 의회 의원들과 각료들을 석방할 것도 촉구했습니다.
G-8 정상들은 이스라엘에 대한 공격은 중단돼야 하며 이스라엘 역시 군사 행동을 중단해야한다고 말했습니다. 이 성명은 유엔이 중동 지역에 대한 새로운 감시 및 안보 임무를 승인해야할 것이라고 말했습니다.
앞서 조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 헤즈볼라와 이스라엘의 싸움의 근본 원인은 헤즈볼라의 시리아 및 이란 간의 관계에 있다고 지적했습니다.
한편 이란 외무부는 이란이 레바논의 헤즈볼라를 위해 군 병력과 미사일을 지원했다는 이스라엘의 주장을 일축했습니다. 이란 정부는 또한 이스라엘에게 시리아를 공격할 경우 상상할 수 있는 피해를 입게될 것이라고 경고했습니다.

Group of Eight leaders meeting in Russia have called for an end to violence between what they termed Middle East "extremists" and Israel's military.
In a statement today (Sunday), the G-8 leaders urged the safe return of Israeli soldiers captured by Lebanon's Hezbollah and by Palestinian factions. They also called on Israel to free Palestinian lawmakers and ministers. They said attacks on Israel should cease, and Israel should halt military action.
The statement said the United Nations should authorize a new observation and security mission for the region.
Earlier, President Bush said the "root cause" of the fighting is Hezbollah and its relationship with Syria and Iran.
In Tehran, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry (Hamid Reza Asefi) denied Israeli claims that Iran had sent soldiers and missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Iran's government also warned that Israel would suffer "unimaginable losses" if Syria is attacked.
