블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령은 이스라엘측의 우려는 정당한 것이지만 무력사용은 균형돼야 한다고 지적하면서 G-8 정상회의 지도자들이 중동사태에 관한 공통된 기반을 모색하게 되기를 기대한다고 말했습니다.
한편, 아랍 국가 외무장관들은 레바논내 헤즈볼라에 대한 이스라엘의 군사공세에 관해 논의하기 위해 이집트 수도, 카이로에서 긴급회의를 열었습니다. 레바논은 이스라엘의 야만적인 침략행위를 규탄하고 유엔 안전보장 이사회가 이스라엘의 공세를 즉각 중지시키도록 행동을 취해야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
President Bush has blamed Hezbollah for the escalating violence in the Middle East and called on Syria to exert influence over the Lebanese militant group to lay down its arms.
Mr. Bush told reporters in St. Petersburg that the best way to end the violence is for Hezbollah to release two kidnapped Israeli soldiers and stop firing rockets into Israel.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Israel's concerns were justified but that the "use of force should be balanced." He expressed hope G-8 leaders meeting in Russia would find common ground on the issue.
Meanwhile, Arab foreign ministers convened an emergency meeting in Cairo to discuss Israel's military offense against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Friday, Lebanon accused Israel of "barbaric aggression" and urged the United Nations Security Council to act immediately to halt the Israeli offensive.
