Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort close the gap between the two nations on the issue of North Korea's missile tests.
The two leaders had arranged to hold a one-on-one meeting today (Saturday) on the side of the G-8 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Tokyo and Washington have offered a revised text for a U.N. Security Council resolution to warn North Korea about its missile tests. The new draft seeks to balance their demands for punitive sanctions with a milder draft resolution sponsored by Russia and China.
Japan and the United States had been seeking a vote today (Saturday) on the revised text but it is unclear if that will take place.
The latest draft demands Pyongyang stop all activities related to its missile program. It also requires all member states to block Pyongyang from receiving or selling missile technology and goods.
