이집트와 요르단은 14일 이스라엘의 레반논 공격을 비난하면서도 카이로에서 외교적 해결을 위해 열린 회담에서 양측에게 자제할 것을 요청했습니다.
호스니 무바라크 이집트 대통령은 이지역의 격화되는 위기를 진정시키는 방안을 강구하기 위해 압불라 요르단 국왕과 만났습니다. 두 정상은 모든 당사자들이 자제할 것을 요청했습니다. 두 정상은 공동 성명을 통해 레바논과 팔레스타인의 기반시설에 가한 이스라엘의 공격은 국제 법에 어긋나는 것이라고 규탄하고, 이스라엘의 레바논과 가자지구 침공을 비난했습니다.
이스라엘의 침공이 시작된 이래 지금까지 가자 지구의 팔레스타인 87명, 레바논의 민간인 61명이 사망했습니다. 요르단과 이집트는 중동에서 유일하게 이스라엘과 외교적 관계를 맺고 평화협정을 체결한 국가들입니다. 두 국가들은 전통적으로 이지역의 중재역할을 맡아왔습니다.
이번 위기 사태를 해결하기 위한 이집트의 노력은 처음이 아닙니다. 무바라크 대통령은 자신은 14일 , 이문제와 관련해 부쉬 미국 대통령과 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장과 대화를 나눴다고 말했습니다.
또한 유엔의 특사가 이스라엘로 향하기 전 카이로에 들러 아흐메드 아불 가이트 이집트 외무 장관과 회담을 가졌습니다. 퍼지 살로욱 레바논 외무장관은 카이로에서 레바논 정부는 하마스와 헤즈볼라 무장단체와 협상 중에 있다고 말했습니다. 살로욱 외무장관은 아랍의 일치단결의 중요성을 강조하고 이번 위기 사태에 유엔 안전보장 이사회가 개입해 줄 것을 요청했습니다. 아랍의 외무부 장관들은 15일 아랍 연맹 긴급회의를 위해 카이로에서 만납니다.
한편 사우디 아라비아는 헤즈볼라가 지역 위기를 초래할 수 있는 계산되지 않은 모험 행위를 감행했다고 지적하며 헤즈볼라를 비판하는 이례적인 입장을 보였습니다. 사우디 아라비아는 헤즈볼라가 두 명의 이스라엘 병사를 납치해 이스라엘로 하여금 레바논을 공격하도록 했다고 비난했습니다.
이번 사태를 외교적으로 해결하려는 노력에도 불구하고, 14일 카이로와 암만에는 약 7000명의 군중이 모여 가자지구와 레바논에 가한 이스라엘의 군사 공격을 항의 하는 시위를 가졌습니다.

INTRO: Egypt and Jordan condemn Israel's attacks in Lebanon Friday and appeal for calm in a day of diplomacy in Cairo. Reporter Leslie Boctor has more from our Middle East bureau in Cairo.
TEXT: Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak met with King Abbullah of Jordan in an effort to contain the growing crisis in the region. The two leaders made a call for restraint from all parties.
Their joint statement condemned the Israeli incursion into Lebanon and Gaza, stating that the attacks on Lebanese and Palestinian infrastructure were against international law. 86 Palestinians in Gaza and 61 people in Lebanon have been killed since Israel's offensive began (EDS: 6-25th in Gaza, and three days ago in Lebanon).
Jordan and Egypt are the only countries in the Middle East who have diplomatic ties and peace agreements with Israel. The two countries are traditionally mediators in the region. This is not the first attempt by Egypt to resolve the crisis. In an newspaper interview earlier this week President Mubarak said his efforts to release of the abducted Israeli soldier by Hamas three weeks ago were sabotaged by what he called "an unnamed party".
Mr. Mubarak said that he spoke Friday with US President George Bush and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan. A special U.N. envoy arrived Friday in Cairo for meetings with the Egyptian foreign minister before continuing on to Israel.
Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Sallouk in Cairo confirmed that the Lebanese government was in negotiations with Hamas and Hezbollah. He stressed the importance for Arab solidarity and called for U.N. Security council intervension.
Arab foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Cairo Saturday for an emergency meeting of the Arab League.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia took the unusual stance of criticizing Hezbollah for what it described as uncalculated adventures which could spiral into a regional crisis. It accused Hezbollah of instigating the Israeli offensive into Lebanon by capturing two Israeli soldiers.
Away from the diplomatic efforts, about seven-thousand people gathered in Cairo and in Amman Friday to protest the Israeli military action in both Gaza and Lebanon. (signed)
