크메르 루즈정권은 지난 1975년부터 1979년까지 수백만명의 캄보디아인들을 이른바 [킬링 필드]로 알려진 지방으로 보내 강제노역에 동원했습니다. 이 과정에서 거의 200만명이 기아와 과로와 처형으로 사망했습니다.
Cambodia has launched the long-awaited genocide trial for former leaders of the Khmer Rouge.
Seventeen Cambodian judges and 10 foreign jurists appointed by the United Nations took their oaths today (Monday) in a ceremony in the capital, Phnom Penh.
The tribunal will decide which Khmer Rouge leaders will face trial on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
During the 1975 to 1979 Khmer Rouge regime, millions of Cambodians were forced to work in the countryside, known as the Killing Fields. Nearly two million people died of starvation, overwork or execution.
The Khmer Rouge's top leader, Pol Pot, died in 1998, but several leaders still live freely in Cambodia. Only two are in jail awaiting genocide charges.
Cambodians have worried that genocide trial preparations have been taking too long. Many Khmer Rouge leaders and their victims are now in their 70s. Trials are expected to begin next year.
