A new study reinforces fears that southern California could be due for a major earthquake.

Writing in the journal Nature, geophysicist Yuri Fialko says the southern part of the San Andreas fault, which lies under the Los Angeles area, appears to have been building up a considerable amount of strain.

The study notes that no major earthquake has released the strain for at least 250 years and suggests that if the energy were released all at once, it could produce a magnitude-8 quake.

Fialko does not predict when such a quake might occur, writing that it "could be tomorrow; it could be ten years from now."

Fialko based his work on radar data from European Space Agency satellites measuring ground movement and data from global positioning measurements.
