President Bush has paid tribute to Hungarians, who 50 years ago made a valiant effort to shake off Soviet communist control.

Soviet tanks and troops crushed the 1956 revolution, but Mr. Bush says the Hungarian people showed the world the strength of their desire to be free.

Hungary threw off communist rule at the end of the 1980s, a few months after Mr. Bush's father (former President George H.W. Bush) visited Budapest.

Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom greeted Mr. Bush, pledging to stand by the United States in the worldwide struggle against terrorism. But he also stressed the importance of respect for human rights in the process.

In a solemn ceremony, Mr. Bush placed a wreath at a monument honoring Hungarians killed in the 1956 revolt.

The centerpiece of the U.S. president's brief visit to Budapest comes later today, in a speech about freedom and democracy in an area long under Soviet domination.

White House officials say Mr. Bush's message is not intended as a rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is hosting a summit next month of the world's leading industrial powers.
