Opposition lawmakers in Taiwan have begun debating a move to oust President Chen Shui-bian over corruption scandals involving his family.
Parliament members from the Kuomintang party, the main opposition group, are seeking a referendum to recall the president for alleged incompetence and financial wrongdoing by his family.
The ruling Democratic Progress Party boycotted the debate today (Wednesday), as Mr. Chen's opponents staged protests outside parliament.
Debate is expected to continue for the rest of this week, but the opposition motion is widely expected to fail. A referendum requires the support of two-thirds of parliament, but the Kuomintang and its allies hold only a slim majority of the 221 seats.
Mr. Chen says he will not speak about the recall motion in parliament, but he denied the allegations against him in a two-hour televised speech Tuesday.
