오스트리아의 볼프강 쉬셀 총리는 21일의 유럽연합과 미국의 정상회담이 매우 알찼다고 말했습니다. 유럽연합 윤번제 회장국인 오스트리아의 피셔 총리는 이번 회담에서 이라크문제, 이란의 핵야욕을 비롯해 발칸반도문제, 에너지와 경제문제 등 여러 현안들을 광범하게 다루었다고 밝혔습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 유럽연합 지도자들이 발칸반도와 같은 지역에서 민주주의를 구축하기 위해 협력하고 있는데 대해 치하했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 과거에는 이라크문제를 둘러싸고 불협화음이 있었지만, 이라크의 새정부가 성공할 것이라는 확신을 나타냈습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 쿠바 관타나모 미 해군기지의 수감시설을 폐쇄하겠다는 결의를 재확인했지만, 이같은 노력이 인명을 해치는 자들을 위해 앞서갈 수는 없다고 말했습니다.

Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel has called today's (Wednesday's) European Union-U.S. summit very fruitful.
The Austrian leader, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, said the talks covered such issues as Iraq, Iran's nuclear ambitions, the Balkans, energy and a wide range of economic issues.
President Bush praised EU leaders for their cooperation in building democracy in such areas as the Balkans. He noted past disagreements over such issues as Iraq, but expressed confidence that the new government in that country will succeed.
He reaffirmed U.S. determination to close down the terrorist detention facility at the naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But he said the effort must not lead to freedom for people who can still do harm.
Earlier, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told the Herald Tribune newspaper that the international community risks "losing our souls" if civil liberties and civil rights are curbed in the fight against terrorism.
