Afghan officials say Taleban fighters who ambushed two convoys carrying members of the same family have killed at least 30 people.
The attacks took place (Sunday) in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province.
The first Taleban assault killed (Jama Gul) a former (Sangin) district leader and at least four of his bodyguards. Forty of the victim's friends and relatives formed a convoy to retrieve his body, but they, too, were attacked in the same area where the first killings took place.
Afghan authorities say the second ambush was a bloodbath in which at least 25 people died, and only a handful survived. Ten of the mourners have disappeared -- possibly abducted by militants.
In a separate clash Sunday in neighboring Uruzgan province, Afghan government troops and coalition forces killed seven Taleban militants and captured four others.
