Coalition and Afghan forces have killed 26 suspected militants in eastern mountains, while in the southern part of the country more than 11,000 troops are participating in what is called the biggest offensive in five years.
Local officials say the militants were killed in a clash in Paktika province near the Pakistani border, with helicopter gunships supporting troops on the ground.
Four civilians were also killed in the same province when a rocket hit their home in a separate rebel attack.
The U. S. military also says suspected Taleban militants attacked a coalition patrol in southern Helmand province with grenades, killing one American soldier and wounding two others. Coalition air-fire killed or wounded 12 militants.
A military spokesman says the coalition is now entering a new phase of an offensive in southern Afghanistan, including (11,000) U.S., British, Canadian and Afghan troops. The goal is to attack Taleban safe havens in four southern provinces (Helmand, Uruzgan, Zabul and Kandahar).
