President Bush says the death of the terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has made this a good week for the cause of freedom.
In his weekly Saturday radio address, Mr. Bush called the killing of Zarqawi an important victory in the war on terror. But he warned that violence in Iraq could escalate in the coming weeks.
Mr. Bush said he will meet with his national security team on Monday to plan the way ahead in Iraq. He said the team will confer with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki by teleconference from the presidential retreat at Camp David (in Maryland) on Tuesday.
Mr. Bush praised American troops for having stayed on Zarqawi's trail through what he called years of near misses. He also praised Mr. Maliki for his determination to bring security to all Iraqis.
Almost 25-hundred U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion more than three years ago. The president did not say whether there are plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Iraq.
