알카에다 테러조직의 2인자인 아이먼 알-자와히리는 9일 마무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치정부 수반이 제안한 국민투표에 반대할 것을 이슬람 교도들에게 촉구했습니다.
자와히리는 아랍어 텔레비전 방송 <알-자지라>가 방영한 녹화 테이프를 통해 팔레스타인은 이슬람의 본당이며 타협의 대상이 아니라고 말했습니다.
압바스 수반은 최근 이스라엘의 존재를 인정하는 팔레스타인 독립국가 방안에 대한 국민투표를 제안했습니다. 팔레스타인 관리들은 하마스가 주도하는 팔레스타인 정부가 독립국가 방안에 합의하지 않을 경우 7월 말 이전에 국민투표를 실시할 것이라고 말했습니다.
올해 초 입법회의 선거를 통해 팔레스타인 정부를 장악한 하마스는 이 방안을 반대하고 있습니다.

The number two leader of the al-Qaida terror network has urged Muslims to oppose a referendum proposed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Ayman al-Zawahiri made the statement in a videotape aired today (Friday) by the Arabic television network al-Jazeera. He said Palestine is a house of Islam and not subject to any compromise.
Mr. Abbas has proposed a referendum on a Palestinian statehood plan that recognizes Israel. Palestinian officials say he will hold the referendum by the end of July unless the Hamas-led Palestinian government agrees to the statehood plan.
Hamas took control of the Palestinian Authority earlier this year. It opposes the plan.
Zawahiri apparently made the tape before learning of the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The leader of al-Qaida in Iraq died in a U.S. airstrike. In the tape, Zawahiri praises Zarqawi but does not mention his death.
