일본 도쿄지방법원은7일, 지난 1950년대 정부의 계획 따라 카리브해 도미니카공화국으로 이민갔던 일본인들이 현지에서 당한 생활고를 이유로 일본 정부에 손해 배상금을 청구할 수 없다고 판결했습니다.
170여명의 일본인 도미니카 이민자들은 도미니카 공화국에서 당초 기대했던 낙원이 아니라 살아있는 지옥을 경험했다면서 지난 2000년 일본 정부에 대해 손해 배상금 지불 소송을 제기했었습니다.
도쿄지방법원은 이날 원고들이 손해배상을 청구할 수 있는 시효가 이미 끝났다면서 그 소송을 기각했습니다. 그러나 법원은 일본 정부가 이민자들에게 고통을 안겨준 책임만은 인정했습니다.

A Tokyo court has ruled that Japanese people who emigrated to the Dominican Republic in the late 1950s on a government scheme cannot claim damages for the hardships they suffered in the Caribbean country.
More than 170 emigrants sued the Japanese government for damages in 2000, arguing their life in the Dominican Republic was a "living hell," rather than the "paradise" they had expected.
The Tokyo District Court rejected the lawsuit today (Wednesday), saying the plaintiffs' right to claim
damages had already expired. But, the court did find the state responsible for the suffering of the emigrants.
